Sorry to follow up on my own post, but Iḿ really wondering what (and I know that its not really an Askozia problem ¨per se¨) people running embedded are going to do, if they have USB based devices which work in 1.0.3, but no longer work in 2.0.

Iḿ even more confused by trying to find out exactly which USB devices are supported by DAHDI -- is there a definitive list somewhere ? Sure its ¨subject to change¨, but I can live with that

I see the following choices

1) stay with 1.0.3, for as long as it may live
2) purchase a known working USB device (few and far between ?? See above
3) purchase a miniPCI ISDN device that works (expensive!)
4) move away from embedded, and get a supported PCI/PCIe device
5) same as (2) but virtualized with KVM/VT-d saving some power, at least

I *REALLY* like Askozia! Its perfect for small family/SOHO, and even larger installations, although Iḿ not using it for that. Kudos for all of the work you have put in over the years. I know that you dont get enough appreciation  Grin

I *REALLY like embedded, since I can use 5W of power  on my ALIX instead of 50 or 60 for some kind of PC.

Finally, if somebody can point me to a source of known working USB device in central europe (germany/switzerland/austria area), which I can buy, please let me know. Iḿ not going to be collecting any more miniVigors with Winbond chips, and ePay is too much of a risk for that.  Does the Dialogic/Eicon Diva USB ISDN (version??) or AVM FritzUSB (version??).

Sorry for the longwinded post....

I wouldn't say it's fair to ask what people "running embedded" are going to do. The question is what are the people running USB ISDN adapters going to do. Askozia is still designed from the ground up to run on embedded systems.

There are HFC based USB ISDN adapters but I am not sure if they are supported by DAHDI. More likely, they are going to be supported by another project included in Askozia, zaphfc (http://code.google.com/p/zaphfc/). This project ports support for HFC-S chipsets from Zaptel to DAHDI. I haven't looked into that code but it is the best bet for HFC USB ISDN support.

Since USB ISDN is a pretty niche solution, your best bet is to move away from it and find a cheap single-port PCI card. Low-power systems do exist which have PCI slots in them. The USB adapters you mentioned are also not supported by DAHDI.

Of course, nothing stops you from sticking with 1.0.3. If it has worked well this long for you, it's not a bad idea. I wish we could have supported everything that 1.0.x did but it was not possible without also using mISDN. We chose not to use mISDN because the tradeoff was minimal and now we're running a unified driver interface for all types of telephony hardware. This is a huge advantage for keeping the internals of the project clean.

Thanks for your kind words about Askozia. I really do appreciate the compliments!
